Understanding Service Obligations

Reservists' service obligations

In order to build their skills, reservists need to be able to attend a variety of training each year. They are required to train for at least 20 days per year, mostly consisting of weekend exercises and training evenings. Reservists may also be required to attend an annual week long field exercise, and other development courses throughout the year.

Employers are asked to grant up to 3 weeks military leave per year to enable these activities to be attended. Military leave may consist or unpaid leave, paid leave, or a mixture of the two.

Cadet Force Officers' service obligations

Cadet Force Officers attend unit routine evening parade activities on a weekly basis and programmed weekend activities. Occasionally cadet force officers may need to plan and supervise multi-day activities, as well as attend professional development courses.

Employers are asked to grant up to 3 weeks military leave per year to enable these activities to be attended. Military leave may consist of unpaid leave, paid leave, or a mixture of the two.
